Privacy Policy

Last updated: 5 August 2026

précis records conversations and turns them into transcripts, summaries and action items. That means it handles material that is often sensitive, so this policy is written to be specific about what happens to it rather than to be reassuring.

The short version

Your recordings are deleted from your device as soon as they have been transcribed. Your transcripts and notes are stored on your device and in your own private iCloud account, where we cannot read them. Audio and transcript text pass through our server on the way to our transcription and analysis providers, but we do not store either. We do not track you, we run no analytics or advertising, and we do not sell anything to anyone.

Who we are

précis is operated by Jacob Mitchell. Questions about this policy or about your data can go to jacobdmitch@me.com.

What précis handles

Audio you record

When you start a session, précis records audio from your microphone and, on macOS only, optionally from your Mac's system audio so that the other side of a video call is captured. The recording is written to a temporary file inside the app's own storage on your device.

The recording is deleted once the session's transcript has been saved. précis keeps the notes, not the conversation. If a session is interrupted — the app quits, the device restarts — the recording survives only long enough for précis to finish transcribing it on next launch.

Transcripts, summaries and speaker names

The text précis produces from your recordings is stored on your device and synced between your own devices through your personal iCloud account, using Apple's CloudKit private database. Data in that database belongs to your Apple Account. We have no access to it and no ability to read it. If you sign out of iCloud or disable it for précis, the data stays local to the device.

Calendar information

If you grant calendar access, précis reads the event happening now or next in order to prefill a session title and to use the attendee list as a hint when naming speakers. Calendar access is optional; the app is fully functional without it. précis never writes to your calendar, and calendar data is not transmitted anywhere except as part of the session material described below.

Job descriptions

In interview mode, any job description you paste is stored with the session and is sent for analysis alongside the transcript so that précis can identify what the conversation has not covered.

Your access code

précis is currently invitation-only. The access code you are given is stored in the Keychain on your device and is sent with each request to our server so that it can apply usage quotas. It is not an account, it is not linked to your name or email address by the app, and it is not used to build a profile of you.

Where your material goes when it is processed

Transcription and analysis cannot happen on your device — they require services we do not run ourselves. Here is the actual path:

StepWhat is sentTo whomRetained?
Transcription Audio segments from your recording Our server, then ElevenLabs Not stored by us
Live suggestions (interview mode) Recent transcript text and your job description Our server, then Anthropic (Claude) Not stored by us
Summary and analysis The session transcript Our server, then Anthropic (Claude) Not stored by us
Ask your library Your question and transcripts from your own sessions Our server, then Anthropic (Claude) Not stored by us

Our server exists so that you do not need your own accounts with these providers — it holds the API credentials on your behalf. It passes your material straight through to the provider and returns the result. It does not write your audio, transcripts, questions or summaries to disk. What it does record is a running count, per access code, of how many megabytes of audio and how many analysis calls have been used in the current month, so that quotas can be enforced. Those counters contain no conversation content.

Our processors

Each of these providers has its own retention practices for material sent to it. We do not control them, and you should read their policies if that matters to you.

What we do not do

Your control over your data

Recording consent is your responsibility

Laws about recording conversations vary widely. Some jurisdictions require only one participant to consent; others require everyone. You are responsible for obtaining whatever consent applies where you are and where the other participants are. précis does not announce itself to a call, and no bot joins on your behalf, which means the other participants will not know a recording is happening unless you tell them.

Children

précis is not directed at children and is not intended for use by anyone under 13. We do not knowingly handle data from children.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes materially, the date at the top will change and the new version will be published here before the change takes effect.
